Friends of Lake Nakuru environment

Friends of Lake Nakuru and Elementaita is a nurtured ambition transformed into reality: the organization has taken with gusto. A wide range of activities have been conducted within the four months of operation embracing local and international training programmes

Objectives

  • Collect data on loss/degradation of biodiversity in Lake Elementaita and identify harm caused by human encroachment.
  • Catalyze stakeholders to institute conservation measures in order to halt degradation.
  • Establish ways and means of incorporating environmental considerations in distinct planning process (for Lake Elementaita Region)
  • Promotion of eco-tourism in the two ecosystems and the country at large
  • Sound management for natural recourses (Flora and Fauna)
  • Control of the pollution to the lakes
  • Enhance use of alternative renewable energy resources
  • Promote income generating activities for the community
  • Support sustainable biodiversity conservation and development

Important facts

Lake Nakuru & Elementaita are highly valued locally and internationally because:

Lake Nakuru is a wetland of international importance (Ramsar Site) mainly as a home of millions of flamingoes, a waterfowl habitat and the first Rhino Sanctuary.

Lake Nakuru & Lake Elementaita habitats are rich in a diversity of bird species i.e. 450 species and 150 species respectively making them and ornithologist haven. A variety of animal species are found in these two ecosystems including rare and endangered species such as Black Rhino, White Rhino and Rothschild giraffes.

The majority of living in the catchments area (i.e. Mau Escarpment, Aberdare) are dependent on farming for their livelihood. Yet improved farming methods are rarely practiced, high siltation of the seasonal rivers is an indicator of forest destruction as a result of human encroachment. The high population of the Nakuru Town, its poor drainage system and industrial effluent pose grave pollution danger to the survival of Lake Nakuru.

Operations

While this is principally a wetland environment conservation project, we hope to achieve our objectives through collaboration with local communities, governments departments, local councils and other conservation groups.

Our activities can be divided into three broad categories.

[A] Lake Nakuru and Elementaita biodiversity

: Working hand in hand with KWS in biodiversity conservation within the Lake Nakuru National Park.
: Working with relevant government departments to ensure proper land use by the communities adjacent to the two wetlands ad the catchment areas.
: Liaising with the government/councils to ensure that industrial laws on effluent disposal are strictly enforced.
: Development of long-term community participation in conservation activities geared to ensure survival of the two ecosystems.

[B] Sustainable development.

These aims at improving the conditions of the communities surrounding Lake Nakuru and Lake Elementaita and those within the Catchment areas; thus reducing the pressure on forests. This involves improving the use of existing resources through:

: Resources use planning and proper land use through community-based seminars.
: Improved farming practices as soil conservation and agro forestry.
: Zero grazing of improved livestock e.g. crossbreeds.
: Income generating projects e.g. bee keeping.
: Use of improved fuel-efficient wood/stoves
: Establish tree nurseries i.e. demonstration plots.

[c] Education and Extension

Support the above activities through:

: Public awareness campaigns
: Production of support materials for the field based naturalists/extension worker.
: Training farmers, community leaders, school parties etc.

Harmonizing

: Contact wildlife conservation & the community
: Eco tourism ethics
: Degradation of buffer zone, e.g. Control of fire outbreaks.
: Vegetation degradation.
: Protection of Riparian Areas.
